LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: Final Stretch

FINAL STRETCH

As the 60 day session draws to a close it appears that the worst threats are behind us. The list of bad bills that were featured in the last report never came up for a vote in the Senate. Your calls and emails convinced enough senators that these extreme measures were bad policy and they never made it to the floor, although all passed through the committee process.

PLAN 4 DIES FOR A SECOND TIME

Maybe it was the short session or maybe the votes just weren’t there but the 401-K style pension plan was among the bills that weren’t brought up in the Senate. Our allies were ready with floor speeches and we were expecting a repeat of last sessions floor fight but as the clock tick away on cutoff day the bill never appeared. Although nothing is really final until they adjourn for the year, it looks like we withstood another session. Thanks to all of you who took the time to call your legislators.

NOW THE BUDGET (SUPPLEMENTAL)

The next few weeks will be spent negotiating the differences between the Senate House and Governors budget with most of the effort focused on education. A simple message to your legislators is “Don’t forget about Local Government in this budget”.
